The Diabetes Research Institute
Vision Statement
Diabetes Contained, Controlled, Cured.
Mission Statement
To find a cure for, or a means of preventing, diabetes and its complications, and to research new treatments that meet the needs of those who have diabetes or are at risk of diabetes.
The Institute is located on the second floor within a dedicated health research building (‘Don Beaven Medical Research Centre’) in Christchurch. The Don Beaven Medical Research Centre provides space, resources and facilities not only for diabetes research, but also for research into health conditions that are complementary to diabetes (such as eye, nerve, heart, and blood vessel diseases).
It is located at 40 Stewart Street, Christchurch and is adjacent to the recently built Diabetes Centre (a unit of expertise in clinical care for those with diabetes mellitus) and the Christchurch Hospital and School of Medicine.
The Diabetes Research Institute incorporates a clinical studies unit with modern equipment, laboratories and work areas for staff, and thus will allow collaboration between clinicians, scientists, nurse researchers and other health professionals involved in diabetes care in the community.
The Diabetes Research Institute building is a geographic hub for clinical and scientific investigation into the causes, treatment and prevention of diabetes and its health complications and further consolidates Canterbury’s importance as a centre of excellence for medical research, teaching and clinical.
Emeritus Professor Donald Beaven set up a diabetes clinical and research unit in Christchurch in the 1960s.
